My good friend, Grammy Dee, from Grammy’s Grid, hosts a blogger’s link party based on story prompts.
This story is a writing exercise and is linked up to Grammy’s Grid – Short Story Prompt Link Party 16. This is how it works…
- write a short story using the short story prompt she provides
- publish your post
- then add it to the link party HERE
This month’s prompt is…The sun was shining brightly but then…
Here is my story.
GOLD IN THE PARKING LOT!
The sun was shining brightly but then I saw it! We have camped all over the country and have picked up 100s (more like 1000s) of rocks along the way. Rocks have always been a passion of mine. My hubby shares this interest and we go on many rock hunting adventures.
But this was not one of them. This was different. Here we were setting up camp in one of our favorite fishing spots on this planet.
The owner of the campground pulled up in his pickup to welcome us back and to see if we had noticed the improvements since we were there last fall.
The new bathhouse was coming along and there was new rock in all the parking areas at each site. I had noticed the new rock but was busy helping get the camper set up and hadn’t had the time yet to really check them out.
When all caught up, as we often do, we pulled out our chairs and sat in the afternoon sun to rest. And then it happened. A shiny, shimmering rock caught my attention. As I studied it closer I could see a tiny thread of gold that streaked through it.
“Could this be gold?” I wondered aloud as I showed it to my husband. “No gold here”, he said as he laughed at my notion of gold.
I sat back in my chair examining my new find, laughing about my gold.
The afternoon sun had warmed us and I walked over to the cooler to fetch us some drinks. When I closed the cooler, I dropped one of the water bottles. When I bent down to pick it up, I saw another “gold” laced rock.
“I found another one!” This one had more gold than the first one did. The rest of the day was spent looking for and finding more gold speckled rocks.
That evening, when the sun had hidden its face and I could no longer see the gold that was right under my feet, I decided to do some research. I discovered that gold had been discovered in small amounts about 150 miles away. There, a rock quarry where rock was dug and crushed had a small vein that ran through it! It had been mined back in the 1860s but produced so little gold that it was abandoned. I bet the new rock at the campground came from that quarry! How exciting! I probably held in my hands REAL gold!
Over the next few days, (ok, the next day…when it got daylight) I gathered a plastic quart bag of gold flaked rocks.
The lady at the country store told me that she had heard that one of the universities nearby would test my rocks to see if they were real gold. There are several universities in the area, so it may take me a while to find the department that can help me.
But that’s ok, all I have is time…and a keen eye for shiny things that sparkle in the sun.
