Short Story Prompt Link Party 8
Grammy Dee, from our Blogging Grandmother’s group, hosts a blogger’s link party based on story prompts.
This story is a writing exercise and is linked up to Grammy’s Grid – Short Story Prompt Link Party 8. This is how it works…
- write a short story using the short story prompt she provides
- publish your post
- then add it to the link party here
Here is her Short Story Prompt… The summer breeze blew through my hair…
And here is my story.
The Summer Breeze
The summer breeze blew through my hair as I sat near the water’s edge. The sea has always called to me but sitting here now with my feet in the sand I can hardly believe I am finally here.
The mist of the cool water splashed against my skin, gently washing away all the years of hard work.
30 years of getting up before daylight are over and the only rising before light now will be to sneak onto the beach and settle in to watch the sunrise above the horizon.
Summers on the island have always been my happy place, but my trips back here were always cut short by the depletion of vacation days. Now that I am retired, I will have time to rest, to chill out and just enjoy the moment!
Now, every day will be a vacation day. So where does one go on vacation when they live on an island? I can’t imagine it would work in reverse. Maybe being retired and doing nothing will get old. I’ve heard it said that retirement is not for the faint of heart. We will see.
My days will consist of sleeping until I wake, walking on the beach until I am tired and napping, lots of napping!
When the sun warms the afternoons I shall find a shade, set up my fan, and create.
On Mondays I will paint, Tuesdays I will craft, Wednesdays I will Volunteer, maybe at a library, or historical society. Lord knows I need to make time for genealogy, I have plenty of elusive ancestors I need to locate.
There will be time for fishing, and for beachcombing. I will take a photography class and practice by snapping pictures of birds, shells, and grandbabies! We will finally have time for visiting grands and catching up on all the school programs we’ve missed.
I will have regular lunch dates with my sister, with shopping on the Strand. I’ve never really had the time to check out all the little shops there. We will hit every single craft show around!
I wonder which days are best for visiting museums and other attractions. I need to find out about the sculpture tour, the dolphin tour, and the island scavenger hunts. Maybe even take in a ghost tour or two!
Oh, and I’ll want to catch some movies at the theater! I’ll be rested and won’t fall asleep as soon as they turn down the lights.
Socializing is important, so I need to reserve some time to meet our new neighbors. Maybe we should host a cookout or two. We will have great fun sitting around the fire pit at night laughing and telling stories about our youth.
Church functions will be important events to schedule. There are several small groups I want to start attending. The women’s retreat will be an annual event as well as helping with the crafting at VBS.
And don’t think I am silly but I love to play miniature golf, I am going to do that too, at least once a week.
And concerts! I haven’t been to one in years because they usually run late into the night. I need to go online and find that schedule!
Art classes are a must-do! I need to perfect my portrait painting skills in oil, acrylic, AND watercolor! And who knows, maybe I will teach a few classes too!
I’ll need a good planner to keep up with my busy schedule. I don’t want to leave anything out.
I should get a good TO DO LIST too. They say staying organized will be key to staying active in retirement!
Perhaps I need to set an alarm to help me remember to schedule a time for scheduling!
But for now, I’m just going to sit here and enjoy the summer breeze blowing through my hair.
