Southern-fried chocolate pies are my family’s favorite treat. Our recipe has been passed down from my grandmother and is a beloved family tradition when we get together for holidays or any days. We love southern fried chocolate pies and the family time spent eating them!
First Some Rules
Cooking southern-fried chocolate pies takes a little time, and creates a little bit of a mess in the kitchen, therefore the need for just 2 rules.
- No one eats a pie until all pies are fried!
- There are two teams, the cooking team, and the cleaning team. Whoever cooks does NOT have to clean.
Generally, I do most of the cooking with the help of one of the girls, or grandkids. There are always volunteers for the cleaning team. Its how the begging begins. “We will clean it up if you will just make us some fried pies!”
Ingredients
- 1 cup sugar
- 3 heaping tbsp cocoa powder
- 1 tsp flour
- water
Canned biscuits – I prefer the large ones like the Grands or the Wal-Mart equivalent. flour oil
Instructions
Mix all dry ingredients for filling. Add a couple of teaspoons of water and stir until you have a thick paste, thin enough to slowly drip off spoon, but not runny. If your paste is too thin you can add a pinch or two of flour to thicken it up.
Roll biscuit dough into a circle about 6-7 inches
Place a heaping tablespoon of the chocolate mixture onto one side of the circle.
Wet the edges of the dough with water and quickly fold over and press the edges with a fork sealing the dough.
Preheat 1/4 inch oil. (medium-high heat) and fry pies for about 3 minutes on each side until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
Comfort food
I grew up eating these pies, and so have my daughters and grandkids. There is nothing like a family get together and the deliciousness of southern-fried chocolate pies.
This post will be linked to some blog parties. You can see where I party here!
Until next time!
