Remington Nature Center
The Remington Nature Center is one of our favorite places to take the grandkids. From the teenagers to the toddlers, it always ranks high on the list of favorite places to visit.
Most of you know we travel with hubby’s work and are on the road 99% of the time, but when we do get a chance to come home for a visit with the grands, we have this destination on the agenda.
PawPaw helped build the Nature Center
One of the reasons I enjoy visiting the nature center is because hubby worked on the construction crew that built the center. He builds lots of different buildings, and projects, and I love visiting them. But Remington Nature Center tops my list with its 13,000 sq foot center packed full of interesting natural science-related exhibits.
All Things Natural
Remington Nature Center is a natural science museum that focuses on the Missouri River and its impact on the area.
The center is set on the banks of the Missouri River and is surrounded by beautiful gardens with native flowers, and walking trails.
Animal Exhibits
Inside the center, you will find a vast array of animal exhibits that show Missouri animals, past and present, in their natural settings.
The most significant display is the Woolly Mammoth. The Woolly Mammoth is a replica of the great beasts that roamed ancient Missouri during the Ice Age. You can read more about the Woolly Mammoths of Missouri here.
Other animals on display in the center include mountain lion, black bear, wild boar, and many others.
Aquarium
The nature center has a 7,000 gallon fresh water Missouri native aquarium. It features many fish that live in the Missouri River valley.
Civil War
There is an exhibit that talks about the Civil War in Missouri, which I found very interesting. The “war between the states” was not just a war between the North and the South. It divided states, counties, towns, and families. Displayed are uniforms from both the Confederacy and the Union, as well as weapons, bullets, and other war-related items.
Native American Culture
There were many exhibits that were related to Native American culture. These included a life-size bison, artifacts such as tools, and arrowheads, and other displays depicting Native American life.
Rocks and Minerals
Most of my readers know by now that I am a Rockhound! You can read more about that here! I love rocks, I collect rocks, I polish rocks with my dad, and I paint rocks. So this part of the Nature Center is my personal favorite part.
There are many displays of agates (my favorite rocks to polish), petrified wood, and other rocks and fossils found in the area.
There is so much to see and do at the Nature Center and I am thrilled that my grandbabies love the Remington Nature Center as much as I do!
Next time you are in the area, its really worth it to spend a couple hours learning about Missouri!
