Ahhh, cooler days are making it easier to do some fall crafting and Fall Gnomes are on my list! It’s just so darn hard to do fall crafting when its 103 degrees, but the “cooler” upper 80-90 degrees we’ve had this weekend makes me think fall is just around the corner!
I enjoy making gnomes. You know, the little mythical creatures that are the exact opposite of trolls. Gnomes are considered good luck and in some countries, legends have it that they protect the earth’s treasures, mines, and precious stones. Of course, I am a naysayer as far as the legends go. But I think they are cute little guys and I like to make them.
A Little Gnome Trivia
The word gnome comes from the Greek word “ge-nomos” and it literally means “earth dweller”. Our modern-day spelling of “gnome” came from the accidental long “e” omission in the Oxford English Dictionary. What a blunder! See, sometimes mistakes do change history. Well, I mean, it changed genomos history.
Fall Gnome Bodies
My gnome bodies are made from different items. I use creamer bottles, pool noodles, and ketchup bottles. I even use old medicine bottles to make the tiny shelf sitters. Sometimes I make the bodies using fabric or felt, and stuff them with fiber fill.
I cover the empty containers with some quilt batting, just so they are not so hard. I like my gnomes to be a little bit fluffy, ha, like me. The
Fall Gnomes pictured above were made with a ketchup bottle and a pool noodle.
Gnome Clothing
I use fabric, felt, and craft foam for all the clothes. Gnomes have a keen sense of fashion, but it’s easy to dress them. They like hats, shoes, bows, and any accessories that make them feel special. You can always use ribbon and flowers to embellish them. I have found that you can dress them in elaborate fabrics or just plain, solid-colored felt. I have been using up my leftover fabrics from the facemasks I made and donated to area nursing homes during the pandemic.
Hair and Beards
Gnome beards can be made from faux fur, fuzzy fabrics, and yarns. I use all those for hair as well. I put braids and ponytails on my girls, and beards and mustaches on my boy gnomes.
Gnomes Make Me Smile
It doesn’t matter what style of gnome it is, they make me smile. They can be made to sit or stand, with legs or no legs, with simple or extreme embellishments. Making them is so much fun and no matter what my gnome plan is, they always have a way of developing their own personalities.
